If you're thinking about adding a pet to your family, we'd be glad to help you choose the right animal. If we don't have the particular animal you're looking for, we'll be happy to add you to our waiting list until the right animal comes our way. In addition to our pet adoption services we provide:
Tips for Pet Owners
Dog Licensing: State, County and City laws require all dogs to be licensed after 4 months of age. Owners can be fined if they do not comply.
Rabies vaccination: State, County and City laws require all dogs and cats be vaccinated after 4 months of age. Owners can be fined up to $500 if they do not comply.
Leash law: All dogs must be restrained at all times, when off the owner's property.
Females in season: During this reproduction time, all females must be confined. If picked up by Animal Control, the owner faces a fine.
Annual physicals: All animals should have an annual exam, including a fecal exam, and booster shots.
Remember...the most important factor in having a good pet is to be a good owner.
Assistance with lost and found animals: If you've lost your pet or found a lost animal, the Humane Society should be your first call. We maintain a lost-pet log and can offer advice as to what other steps you can take. For lost or stray animals we provide space until an owner can be found.
24-hour emergency service for injured animals: Our Animal Control Officers are on-call around the clock to respond to medical emergencies.
Investigation of animal cruelty complaints: If you suspect that an animal is being abused, neglected or mistreated, don't hesitate to contact the Humane Society. Within 24 hours, we'll investigate the complaint and take whatever steps are necessary to remedy the situation.
Spaying and neutering information: The Humane Society provides details on low-cost spay/neuter programs.
Information and referral services: If you have a question on animal care, the Humane Society can be a valuable resource for behavior problems, minor medical problems, veterinary-service referrals, dog-training, etc.
Public education on animal care: Our "Humane Education" program provides information through newspaper articles, presentations to schools and civic organizations, as well as our regular newsletter "Paws & Claws."
Assistance in improving laws on animal welfare: The Humane Society works with both the County and the City.
Pet licensing: Wicomico County law requires that dog owners secure a license for their pet. It can be acquired through the Humane Society or your vet.
